Role Overview
We are seeking a Hydrologist / Catastrophe Risk Modeller with strong quantitative skills, hands-on experience in flood and hydraulic modelling, and an interest in applying scientific expertise within a risk-focused context. You will contribute to both physical flood hazard modelling and financial risk evaluation, working closely with interdisciplinary teams to drive risk insights that inform business decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and execute hydrological and hydraulic model development, including model setup, calibration, validation, and spatial outputs.
- Analyze flood hazard processes and risk, integrating physical modelling with catastrophe model frameworks.
- Interpret model results to produce actionable metrics for risk analytics, portfolio assessment, and underwriting support.
- Collaborate with data scientists, actuaries, underwriters, and other stakeholders to translate complex technical outputs into clear insights.
- Develop and maintain efficient Python workflows for data processing, numerical analysis, scripting, and automation.
- Work with spatial data and GIS tools (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS) to manage terrain, exposure and mapping products.
- Innovate and implement methodological improvements in flood estimation, extreme value analysis, and modelling workflows.
- Assist in communicating risk analyses to internal and external audiences.
Qualifications
Essential
- Academic background in mathematics, physics, geography, hydrology, civil/environmental engineering, computer science, or a related quantitative field.
- Proven experience with river and storm surge hydraulic modellingand flood risk projects, including model setup, calibration and mapping (e.g. HEC-RAS, MIKE + 2D, TUFLOW, LISFLOOD, SFINCS)
- Strong command of Python for quantitative analysis (e.g., pandas, NumPy, SciPy, xarray) and scripting.
- Familiarity with hydrology and flood estimation methods (e.g., rainfall–runoff modelling, extreme value analysis).
- Comfortable working with GIS tools and spatial datasets for terrain analysis and flood mapping.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and in teams.
Desirable
- Would be great if you have experience with catastrophe modelling in insurance and financial services, but not mandatory
- Familiarity with commercial catastrophe models or frameworks used in the industry.
- Experience with cloud platforms, version control (e.g., Git), or advanced computational environments.
- Interest in AI/ML applicationsto environmental or risk modelling problems.
What We Offer
- The opportunity to work on impactful projects that blend scientific modelling with real-world risk decisionsin financial and insurance contexts.
- Exposure to interdisciplinary collaboration with risk, data, and climate experts.
- Professional growth and learning opportunities in risk analytics and environmental modelling.
- A culture that values innovation, scientific rigor, and impactful outcomes.
